January meeting – Thursday 16th

Our first meeting in 2014 will be on Thursday 16th January, and we are hoping to have a series of lightning talks from user group members this month so that anyone interested can have a trial run in preparation for doing the session at SQL Saturday in March.

Hopefully you have been putting ideas together over the holiday and will be there next week to give us 5 minutes on a SQL Server related topic.

If you haven’t then there is still time to create a slide or two and maybe some demo code and come along and do a session. If you haven’t already, please let Jonathan or Annette know that you (will) have a session ready so that we can schedule the running order. It’s totally fine if you don’t want to present a session, please still come along as your feedback will be invaluable for those that do a session.

December Meeting – Thursday 12th

We are pleased to be joined by Richard Douglas ( w | t ) for our December meeting. Rich will present his session:

The Day After Tomorrow: Why you need to baseline

Ensuring peak SQL Server performance isn’t always easy and requires a lot of work on the part of the DBA. To maintain the best-possible performance, you need to make sure you’re monitoring the right things. But how do you know if the figures you’re seeing are good or bad? Baseline comparisons can help, and in this educational session, SQL Server expert Richard Douglas will show you how to get the most from them. Richard will explain what a baseline is, why and when you need to take one, and how you can create one. You’ll also learn about a number of native Windows and SQL Server tools that will allow you to do just that.

After the meeting we are going to head over to The Barn Owl pub for a Christmas drink, so please do join us if you can.
